WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN YOUTH WORK WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

The Westminster youth group and leaders arrived with hands and hearts ready to make a difference in another family’s life with Habitat volunteers and the volunteer building committee. They spent the day working on the Pickard home on the garage floor, moving the fill and rock and compacting to prepare the area for the concrete floor. The day was filled with lots energy, laughter and good fellowship by all and ended with the knowledge that their efforts greatly impacted the Pickard family helping to provide a safe home for children and mom. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with this wonderful and energetic youth group and their leaders who leave our hearts filled with good memories and each has left a loving memory in the hearts of those they have helped.

In addition to all the hours and the work completed the youth group presented a check for $100.00 to Habitat to help pay for materials on the home.

We greatly appreciate each of you, all the hours of work and the financial donation made by the youth, thank you from all of us here at Habitat for Humanity and the Pickard family; we look forward to working with all of you again.

Lisa Stine, youth leader said “the young people at Westminster Presbyterian Church near Lloyd Center in northeast Portland grow up learning the value of the work done by Habitat for Humanity International. As a covenant partner with Habitat, Westminster's youth buy parts of houses for alternative Christmas gifts each year as part of the church's mission. Adults from the congregation work once a month at the local Portland chapter. Two groups of youth and adults from Westminster have worked with Habitat overseas, one summer in Poland, and last summer in Hungary. The high school youth have worked for Habitat in Montana, Idaho, California, Washington, and Nevada over the course of the past twelve summers. Several of Westminster's middle school youth and their advisors are undertaking their twelfth annual summer work party by spending partnering with Tillamook County Habitat for Humanity at their work site in Bay City. The group worked with Tillamook Habitat previously in August of 2003 and with the Eugene/Springfield chapter in 1999. These young people have grown up hearing stories of build sites from older siblings and from adults who have had life-changing experiences while working for Habitat, and they look forward to being able to make a difference, too! The result that excites them the most is not only being able to see the work that has been accomplished at the end of the day, but knowing that a family will be one step closer to having a home of their own because of the work that was done. To a 13 year old (and to the rest of us who have been previously blessed from partnering with Habitat!), that's just awesome!"
